Nourishing the Planet
Increase the Scope of Carbon Labelling in Menus at The Good Eating Company.
At he Good Eating Company, we have been working with My Emissions since 2021 to carbon label all our core menu items
In an era where environmental consciousness is at the forefront of consumer decisions, the food industry is undergoing a transformative shift towards sustainability. As awareness of environmental issues grows, diners are increasingly seeking transparency in the sustainability practices of their favourite eateries. My Emissions provide a valuable service by quantifying the carbon footprint associated with each dish, offering diners a tangible measure of the environmental impact of their food choices.
At the Good Eating Company have been working with My Emissions since 2021 to carbon label all our core menu items and increasing uptake to site specific menus too. My Emissions use the latest food-based databases to keep up with the ongoing scientific research, delineating between organic farming methods and country of origin. Each dish is graded between A (Very Low) to E (Very High), based on the ‘per kg’ carbon footprint of the food. Much like nutritional labels, My Emissions are actively engaging with DEFRA to standardise eco-labelling, advocating for a single labelling approach so customers can make comparisons across brands.
There are many aspects to a menus’ sustainability in addition to carbon labelling, such as water consumption of ingredients, seasonality, animal welfare and labour standards. However, as customers increasingly recognise the impact of their food choices on the planet, carbon labelling emerges as a powerful tool to foster transparency and empower consumers to make climate-conscious decisions. Communicating climate data will be an iterative process and The Good Eating Company’s partnership with My Emissions has some exciting projects in the pipeline…we can’t wait to share with you soon!
