As urban spaces continue to expand and soil quality diminishes, the need for innovative solutions in agriculture has never been more pressing. At The Good Eating Company, we are deeply committed to sourcing the best local, seasonal produce for our clients. But as we look to the future, could hydroponics and vertical farming become the next big step in sustainable food production? In this blog, Alexandra Kristall, our Managing Director, shares her thoughts on this evolving trend and what it means for the future of food.

Thought on Hydroponics

In the past, hydroponics was often seen as a niche method, primarily used for growing speciality items like wheatgrass and pea shoots. However, this is rapidly changing. With advancements in technology and a growing awareness of the need for sustainable practices, hydroponics is now being embraced on a much larger scale.

The Importance of Quality Produce at GEC

At The Good Eating Company, the quality of our ingredients is paramount. We believe that local, seasonal produce not only delivers superior flavour but also supports sustainable farming practices. Our small farm in East Grinstead is a testament to this commitment, providing us with fresh vegetables daily. But with challenges like soil depletion on the rise, we are exploring new methods to maintain our high standards.

The Rise of Urban Farming

There’s been a noticeable increase in urban hydroponic setups, particularly those from Square Mile Farms. These urban gardens are becoming a familiar sight, transforming concrete landscapes into vibrant, green spaces. This trend is not just about aesthetics; it represents a shift towards more sustainable and localised food production.

Gearing Up for the World’s Healthiest Building

This summer, The Good Eating Company is excited to be part of a groundbreaking project: the World’s Healthiest Building. With an acre of vertical hydroponics farm at our disposal, we will be incorporating fresh, sustainable produce into our dishes. This initiative is a significant step forward in our mission to offer healthy, high-quality food while embracing innovative farming methods.

What does the Future of Food look like ?

As we continue to explore and adopt new agricultural practices, hydroponics and vertical farming offer promising solutions to the challenges of modern food production. At The Good Eating Company, we are excited to be at the forefront of this movement, integrating these cutting-edge techniques into our operations. The future of food is here, and it is green, sustainable, and incredibly delicious.
